| Let’s listen to Jesus as He outlines our basic spiritual needs: Spiritual Component One Mat 5:3 Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. Luke 6:20 (NIV) Looking at His disciples, He said: “Blessed are you who are poor, for yours is the kingdom of God.” | The book of Luke leaves out the “in spirit” part. The Matthew “in spirit” aids those of us who struggle with spiritual concepts. We would probably have built a doctrine of poverty around this passage in Luke. Jesus isn’t talking about money, as I am sure you know. He is talking about a poverty that brings the Kingdom of God into us. John 4:24 (NIV) God is spirit, and His worshipers must worship in spirit and in truth. Our poor spirit needs a Spirit. Jesus is talking about a person who is poor in spirit and knows they are poor in their spirit. The very first aspect of our being poor in spirit is coming to God for salvation. |
